Nearly 15% of the daily kerbside collection coming into the facility was contaminants, which created a range of problems for the staff. 

Plastic bags, nappies, needles, clothing, even dead animals were becoming more and more prevalent in the recycling collection. These contaminants were putting staff at risk, which was not acceptable so we had to create a connection for the public with the workers. 

With tours of the plant for the public a health and safety risk, Tamworth Recycling needed a way to educate the public on the dangers of contaminants to staff in a fun and interactive way.

Let's make this fun!

Technology now allows us to do all sorts of crazy things,so why not bring people to the plant through video? But this is Keo, and we don't do things by halves, so we created a 360 video with anchor points to help share information about the machines and staff. 

It was also important to build empathy and connection between the public and the workers, so we created a range of videos and imagery of workers stories to emphasise the human cost of contaminant, alongside helpful visual aids on what to include and keep out of the yellow recycling bins. 

This was all presented in a simple to navigate website, ensuring all members of the public could be educated on recycling contaminant. 

The result? It's worked! Since launching contaminant at the plant has dropped from 15% to 10% in a matter of months. Our clever developers included a nifty contamination meter on the website too, so the public can track their success. 

Working with the Keo team was fantastic! 

We took a concept and idea to them about what we wanted to achieve factoring in our barriers and limitations, but we did not constrain them with preconceived ideas about how it had to be. This gave them the creative freedom and valued technical input to provide an amazing interactive, informative and dynamic educational resource and platform that has the ability to continue to evolve into the future due to the ever changing operational environment and industry.

They took an unsexy yet highly important issue of waste and recycling and turned it into an informative, interactive and created that essential human connection with the people who are at the cold face of dealing with the less than glamorous side of a throw away society. From their project proposal through to the execution of the project, they were an enthusiastic, highly professional and provided clear communication and updates on schedules etc as and when required. They were always available to talk to and answer any questions we had and have continued to be there after the project was complete if we have needed.
